Maha Kumbh Mela (Fair happening in Haridwar, India) |
Have you ever heard a festival named Maha Kumbh Mela, (Mela is a Hindi word for Fair) Maha Kumbh is a festival of faith. It takes place in Prayagraj, Haridwar, Ujjain, and Nashik- is deeply tied into the planet alignment of the Sun, Moon, and Jupiter. The Maha Kumbh Festival is celebrated at these 4 places because in Hindu mythology when the gods and demons fought over a pot/kumbh of nectar, few drops fell at each of those places in the the holy rivers. And this is the reason behind it! The Maha Kumbh Festival is celebrated after every 12 years. The Kumbh Festival is celebrated every 6 and 12 years. The next Maha Kumbh will happen after 144 years this time in 2169! It is not after 12 years this time because of the planet allignment. It has the largest peaceful gathering of people in the world. In Prayagraj, this festival takes place at Triveni Sangam. Triveni means three rivers. Those three rivers meeting make a Sangam, (Sangam is a Hindi word for meet). That's why it is called Triveni Sangam.
Those three holy river's names are Ganga, Yamuna, and Saraswati. In the Sangam, where the rivers meet we can clearly see the difference in the color of water. One side of the river is brown and the other is green. The brown side is the Yamuna river. The green side is the Ganga river. The Sarswati river flows underneath. It's basically invisible. There are also events about celebrating faith, unity, and ancient traditions.
The main purpose of Maha Kumbh Festival is to take a dip in the holy river Ganga. Literally! It is to believe that the river will wash away all your sins that you have done. This festival is protected by UNESCO, United Nations Education Scientific and Cultural Organization. The UNESCO inscribed it as an Intangibly Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
